2006 Sydney Harbour Week Award Winners

Sydney Harbour Week Award winners were announced tonight for their commitment to the Harbour.
The 2006 Sydney Harbour Week Awards, which herald the start of Sydney Harbour Week (March 3 – 12), were presented aboard the historic Tall Ship James Craig in the categories of Artist, Community, Environment, Heritage, Indigenous, Tourism and Lifetime Achievement.
The Awards recognise a group or individual who has encouraged people to care for and share Sydney Harbour by informing, educating or engaging the community.
The third annual Sydney Harbour Week Awards winners received hand-chiselled trophies – replicas of the Hornby Lighthouse, located at South Head, Sydney Harbour.
Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO was the chair of the selection committee that included representatives from the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM), NSW Maritime, City of Sydney, Department of Planning, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

>David Van Nunen - Artist Award
David is renowned for his vivid, evocative images of Sydney Harbour and its foreshores, which he has been painting since 1977. His paintings have been exhibited throughout Australia, the United States, Europe, Mexico and Asia. read more...
Barry Jones - Community Award
Barry has spent an entire lifetime working in, on and around Sydney Harbour starting as a fitter and turner at Cockatoo Island and more recently as a volunteer for many years with the Sydney Heritage Fleet. He has been instrumental in the restoration of historic vessels James Craig and John Oxley. read more....
Friends of the Barn - Environment Award
Colleen Godsell has led a group called Friends of the Barn which is involved in preserving and protecting what is believed to be the oldest stone building surviving in the lower North Shore and Sydney’s only remaining maritime industrial structure dating from the early Colonial period – the Barn Project, in Mosman. read more...
National Trust of Australia (NSW) - Heritage Award
Since the early 1980s the Trust has been recording, classifying and listing harbourside and ocean pools, culminating in 1994 with the National Trust’s Survey of Harbourside & Ocean Pools of the Sydney Metropolitan Region. In 2005 the Trust revised and updated the survey – an essential piece of the jigsaw of history that is Sydney Harbour – which is publicly available. read more...
Shane Phillips - Indigenous Award
Shane is a driving force behind a team of volunteers involved with the vessel Tribal Warrior who realise the value in getting kids off the street and building self-esteem through training and the provision of work. He has assisted and is continuing to assist underprivileged young people to acquire their maritime training for deckhand and coxswain. read more...
City of Sydney (New Year’s Eve) - Tourism Award
The City of Sydney in preparing for the 2005 Sydney New Year’s Eve developed and implemented services providing accessibility to tourists, photographers, news journalists and international organisations whose work contributes to the event’s international standing. read more...
Michael York OAM - Lifetime Achievement Award
Michael York is a Governor of the Sydney Heritage Fleet. He has played a major role in the recommissioning of the James Craig and the Waratah, as well as maintaining, running and captaining of the historic schooner Boomerang.
Michael represented Australia at the highest level of yachting – in the first America’s Cup, at the Olympic Games, the Admirals Cup, as well as many other top international competitions. He has also completed 14 Sydney-Hobart yacht races. He has received an Order of Australia Medal for his assistance to maritime heritage and the restoration of the Tall Ship James Craig. read more...
