2004 Sydney Harbour Award Winners
Thursday 11 March 2004
The Inaugural Sydney Harbour Awards will be announced at 6pm tonight by Ian Kiernan aboard 19-century barque James Craig, Wharf 7, and Pyrmont.
The Sydney Harbour Awards will formally recognise the contribution the community makes to Sydney Harbour.
44 nominations were received across the categories of Art, Community Involvement, Environment, Heritage, Indigenous, LifeTime Achievement and Tourism.
An additional ‘special award’ will also be announced this evening. Some of the recipients include:
Jane Bennet - Artist Award
Jane Bennet lives in Mosman and has captured images of the foreshore and Harbour for over 20 years. Her body of work includes several images of Walsh Bay and in a sense presents a pictorial record of Sydney Harbour.
Friends of Cockatoo - Community Award
The Friends of Cockatoo Island exemplify the Harbour Community. As a group comprised of people from throughout Sydney, they have worked to chronicle the history of this Harbour Island and lobby for its preservation.
Sister Bay Regeneration Group - Environment Award
The Sisters Bay Regeneration Group has worked to re-establish two kilometres of foreshore along the Parramatta River. Their work is extensive and includes the replanting of several native species.
Australian Heritage Fleet - Heritage
The Australian Heritage Fleet is a treasure to the people of Sydney. Here we stand aboard the James Craig, which was for the better part of last century shipwrecked in Tasmania. The work of the heritage fleet to restore this vessel and many more is monumental. For they have created a collection that will float for generations to come.
Tribal Warrior
The Tribal Warrior completed a circumnavigation of Australia in 2003. The vessel was crewed entirely by indigenous Australians and their voyage enabled members of the crew to speak with indigenous communities throughout Australia. They are an integral part of Sydney Harbour.
Trevor Haworth - Tourism
Trevor Haworth pioneered tourism on Sydney Harbour. He has established Captain Cook Cruises which has been a fixture in the tourist experience of Sydney for over 30 years.
The Sydney Harbour Awards are proudly presented by the Waterways Authority as part of Sydney Harbour Week 2004.
