Moruya River is a bar harbour, the entrance to which is between two breakwaters 150 metres apart. The navigable channels vary from 24 metres to 60 metres in width and normally have an average depth of 2 metres at low water.

Overhead and submarine cables and pipes cross the river at various points, and are usually indeicated by warning notices on the shore. Caution should be exercised at all times while navigating or anchoring in the vicinity of these crossings.
