Iluka/Yamba marks the entrance to the Clarence River which is 240 miles in length and is buoyed and beaconed, and navigable by vessels of 4m draft to Grafton and South Grafton, about 42 miles from the sea. NSW Maritime maintains a Pilot Station on Wooli Head, Yamba.

The Clarence River offers protected waters for a range of boating from kayaks and canoes through to commercial vessels, while offshore the area is popular for recreational and commercial fishing.
