Privacy Statement

Introduction

 

This Privacy Statement is provided pursuant to the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act – 1998 (“the Privacy Act”).

Maritime along with other public sector agencies, is required to comply with the requirements of the Privacy Act which regulates the way in which agencies deal with personal information. In particular, the Privacy Act specifies the minimum requirements in relation to the collection, storage, access, use and disclosure of personal information.

When you visit the Maritime website, certain information is collected about your visit and the website provides a number of facilities that, if utilised, involve the collection of personal information.

What Information do we collect & why?

 

Site Visit Information

When you look at the pages on the Maritime website, our computers automatically record the following information:-

  • the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the machine which has accessed it;
  • your top-level domain name (for example .com, .gov, .au, .uk etc.);
  • the address of your server;
  • the date and time of your visit to the site;
  • the pages accessed and documents downloaded;
  • the previous site visited; and
  • the type of browser and operating system you have used.

This information is collected and recorded for purposes associated with identifying categories of users and patterns of usage to assist in improving the Maritime website and the services offered on it.

On-line Payments

The Maritime website has an on-line payment facility which allows you to renew your boat licence, vessel registration or mooring licence. When you use this facility we collect information from you including your licence/registration renewal number, credit card number and contact information.

The provision of personal information to Maritime by way of its on-line payment service is voluntarily.

This information will only be used or disclosed for purposes associated with the renewal of your licence/registration (ie. the purpose for which it was collected).

Email Feedback

The Maritime website allows you to request information or make enquiries and/or suggestions about our website by sending us an email. When you email us we record your email address and any other information provided by you.

The provision of personal information to Maritime by email is voluntary.

This information will only be used or disclosed for purposes associated with fulfilling your request or responding to your enquiry/suggestion. Maritime will not add your email address or name to a mailing list unless you specifically request us to (See Below).

Subscribe to Newsletter

The Maritime website allows you to subscribe to our newsletter “Maritimes”. When you subscribe to this service Maritime records your name and email address.

The provision of personal information pursuant to this service is voluntary.

This information will only be used or disclosed for purposes associated with fulfilling your request.

Who are the intended recipients of the information?

Generally, the information is only accessed by appropriate Maritime Officers and is not disclosed to any other party for a purpose other than that for which it was collected unless your consent has been obtained or we are required to do so by law. For example, the Maritime may be required to disclose this information to a law enforcement agency in any of the following circumstances:-

  • Unauthorised tampering or interference with files published on the Maritime website
  • Unauthorised attempts to access files which are not published on the Maritime website
  • Attempts to intercept messages of other users of the Maritimey website
  • Communications that are defamatory, abusive or that vilify individuals
    Attempts to otherwise compromise the security of the Maritime website
  • Any breach of the laws of NSW or the Commonwealth of Australia

How is the information stored?

The information collected by the Maritime website is stored in a secure format and held by the Maritime Internet Service Provider "AAPT Limited.

When the information is no longer required for the purpose for which it was collected, it is deleted.

Access to your personal information

Maritime will, at your request, provide you with access to personal information it holds about you. Your request should be made in writing and addressed to:

Maritime will process your request free of charge where the time required to comply with the request does not exceed one hour and after that time, may charge you a fee of $30 per hour.

Correction of your personal information

Maritime takes reasonable steps to ensure that any personal information we collect about you is accurate, relevant, up-to-date and complete. If you find that this is not the case, please contact us immediately and we will take reasonable steps to ensure it is corrected.

Where Maritime does not agree with your view about the accuracy of your personal information, your claim will be noted where the information is stored and accessed.

Links to Third Party Sites

Maritime provides a number of links to third party sites and in doing so, assumes no responsibility for the personal information practices of the owners of those sites. Maritime encourages all users to review each site’s Privacy Statement/Policy before disclosing any personal information.
