Crewing Certification

The qualifications required to operate commercial vessels are known as certificates of competency. To obtain a certificate of competency you need to:

  • Meet minimum qualifying service requirements. Your experience in recreational boating can help towards gaining an entry level certificate. However you must be able to provide good records of your boating experience and you should obtain a Record of Service book from the NSW Maritime Authority;
  • Meet minimum age requirements;
  • Meet specific medical and eyesight standards;
  • Complete appropriate training;
  • Pass a final practical/oral assessment by a NSW Maritime Authority examiner; and
  • Pay examination fees.
