Sea Service Required

Sea service requirements for the different Certificates of Competency are summarised below:

Grade Minimum Age Total Sea Service

Coxswain

18

12 months
Of which 3 months service is on vessels less than 24m in length.

Master Class 5

19

30 months
Of which in the last 5 years:

  • 12 months service is on vessels less than 35m in length, and
  • 3 months service is on a trading vessel.

Mate Class 4

19

36 months
Of which:

  • 12 months service is in the last 5 years
  • 6 months service is on a trading vessel
  • 6 months service is on a vessel less than 80m in length.

Master Class 4

20

18 months watchkeeping with Master 5, or
12 months watchkeeping with Mate 4 or Second Mate as well as appropriate experience on vessels less than 80m.
Of which:

  • 12 months watchkeeping within the last 5 years;
  • 6 months watchkeeping on trading vessels; and
  • 6 months watchkeeping on vessels less than 80m in length.

Master Class 3

NA

18 months watchkeeping with Master 4, or
36 months watchkeeping with Second Mate or Mate 4.
Of which:

  • 12 months watchkeeping within the last 5 years;
  • 12 months watchkeeping on trading vessels; and
  • 6 months watchkeeping on vessels between 20-80m in length.

Marine Engine Driver Grade Three (MED 3)

18

6 months or
3 months with trade certificate.
Service must include operation and servicing of diesel inboard engines of 75kW or more.

Marine Engine Driver Grade Two (MED 2)

18

12 months or
6 months with MED 3 or
3 months with trade certificate.
Service must include operation and servicing of diesel inboard engines of 150kW or more.

Marine Engine Driver Grade One (MED 1)

19

24 months or
15 months with MED 3 or
9 months with MED 2 or
6 months with trade certificate.
Service must include operation and servicing of diesel inboard engines of 200kW or more.

Engineer Class 3

20

18 months with MED 1 or
12 months with trade certificate.
Service must include operation and servicing of diesel inboard engines of 400kW or more.
Approved service shall be counted as follows:
Inshore service will be counted at 66%.
Harbour service will be counted at 50%.

Skipper Grade Three

19

30 months
Of which in the last 5 years:

  • 12 months service is on commercial vessels less than 35m in length, and
  • 3 months service is on a fishing vessel.

Skipper Grade Two

20

12 months watchkeeping with Skipper 3
Of which:

  • All watchkeeping service is on vessels 12m or more in length; and
  • 6 months watchkeeping within the last 5 years; and
  • 6 months watchkeeping on fishing vessels.

Skipper Grade One

NA

36 months with Skipper 3
Of which:

  • 24 months is watchkeeping service; and
  • 12 months is watchkeeping service on fishing vessels of 24 m or more in length.
