Hire and Drive

Hire and Drive Vessels are vessels that are hired for recreational use. The standards and operating conditions required to be met by these vessels vary according to the vessel size and type. These vessels are required to either have a Certificate of Survey, or operate under a Hire and Drive licence.

Hire and Drive Licences

NSW Maritime has a system for licensing operators of small and human powered hire and drive vessels that ensures safety standards are strictly adhered to by Hire and Drive operators. A person must obtain a Hire and Drive license (issued by NSW Maritime) if they would like to hire out to the public any of the following vessels:

  • powered hire vessels which are under 6m in length
  • unpowered hire vessels such as a canoe, kayak, rowboat or pedalcraft (human powered)
  • ‘off the beach’ sailing vessels of any length

Hire & Drive

If the vessel operators are licensed with NSW Maritime you can be assured that the business is subject to a number of strict conditions regarding the standard of the boats for hire and other general safety matters.
