Divisions
Recreational Boating and Regional Services
The Recreational Boating and Regional Services Division is responsible for the following safety, legislative, compliance and education functions for recreational boating:
- educating users on safe boating through the issue of licences, educational programs, the Internet and by establishing and supporting user groups
- vessel registration, mooring management
- licensing of hire and drive operations (non survey)
- marine communications
- maintaining a state-wide system of navigation aids and signs
- undertaking environmental assessments of on-water activities to minimise adverse environmental impacts
- compliance with maritime legislation on all navigable waterways in the State.
The Recreational Boating and Regional Services Division includes 33 regional offices located in the North Coast, South Coast, Hunter Inland, Murray/Inland, Sydney, and Hawkesbury/Broken Bay Regions.
The Division is responsible for major aquatic event on-water coordination such as Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race start, New Years Eve Fireworks, and Australia Day on-water activities.
The Division is also responsible for the cleaning of litter and debris from the waters and foreshores of Sydney Harbour, and the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers.
Commercial Vessels
The Commercial Vessels Division of NSW Maritime. Our goal is to serve the boating community of NSW by ensuring all commercial vessels are safe and are being operated by competent crew in a safe boating environment.
The Commercial Vessels Division is divided into three branches:
- Commercial Operations Branch
- Wharf Audit and Infrastructure Grants Branch
- Policy Branch
The Commercial Vessels Division has the following key responsibilities:
- Inspection of vessels in commercial use and inspection of public ferry wharves
- Certification that crew meet national standards for skills and training
- Policy and regulatory review, and administration of commercial vessel legislation
- Funding of local government and community groups for infrastructure
Ports and Shipping
The Ports and Shipping Division focuses on:
- Ports to support a growing economy; and
- Port safety and security.
Key activities include:
- the management of the regional ports Eden and Yamba
- providing strategic advice to the three NSW Ports Corporations
- the coordination of maritime security arrangements across NSW
- the development of advice on shipping and safety matters at NSW ports
- the development of advice to the Government on a range of matters associated with ports and shipping in NSW
- oversight of the implementation of the NSW Ports Growth Plan
- coordination of NSW Maritime’s input into national forums under the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and the Australian Transport Council (ATC)
- the facilitation of stakeholder forums including the quarterly NSW Maritime and Port Corporations’ Chief Executives meetings and the Minister for Ports and Waterways’ Port Botany Logistics Taskforce.
The Ports and Shipping Division also conducts investigations into the causes and circumstances of maritime incidents and monitors the implementation of safety recommendations by independent transport investigators such as the Office of Transport Safety Investigations and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
The Division also manages the NSW State Waters Oil and Chemical Spill Contingency Plan and develops advice and policy on marine environmental matters relating to ports and shipping.
Maritime Property
The Maritime Property Division comprises four core business areas:
- Strategic Development and Commercial Property
- Domestic Property and Geospatial Services
- Infrastructure Procurement and Planning
- Business Support and Policy
covering the following key functions:
The Maritime Property Division is responsible for the management and administration of NSW Maritime’s significant property portfolio. The total value of the property portfolio comprises the major proportion of NSW Maritime’s $770M of assets.
Policy & Strategy
The Policy & Strategy Division co-ordinates and maintains NSW Maritime’s framework of policies and procedures and develops new policy and procedural approaches to address organisational requirements.
The Division interacts with external stakeholders, conducts public exhibition and comment processes and assists with strategic advice to government agencies on maritime-related matters.
The Division is responsible for:
- the preparation and implementation of major operational policies, procedures and guidelines
- planning and managing the Authority’s overall legal function on a state-wide basis and for ensuring that high standard legal services are provided in a consistent, cost effective and timely manner
- media liaison, stakeholder communications and publications, publishing the Internet, marketing, sponsorships, corporate brand and the development and implementation of marine safety media and public information campaigns
- developing the NSW Maritime’s annual Results and Services Plan, the Annual Report and the coordination of corporate and business planning activities across NSW Maritime
- preparing, writing and reviewing correspondence, briefings and parliamentary materials and for administrative support to the Chief Executive
- providing administrative support to the Maritime Ministerial Advisory Committee, NSW Maritime's peak advisory group.
Corporate Services
The Corporate Services Division oversees the efficient functioning of NSW Maritime’s records management, risk management, human resources, finance, accounting, budgeting, funds management, asset services and information technology support.
The Division also interacts with numerous external stakeholders, seeking and providing advice and fulfilling NSW Maritime’s statutory reporting obligations.
