Coffs Harbour was formed by the construction of breakwaters and reclamation, joining two offshore islands to the mainland. The northern island, named Muttonbird Island, 44m in height and about 600m in length, lies 900m off the shore with which it is connected by a breakwater. The southern side of the harbour was formed by joining to the mainland, by reclamation, what was formerly named South Coffs Island.
The waters off Coffs Harbour are popular with sailors and fishers, and feature the Solitary Islands which are clusters of scattered islets and rocks up to 7 miles offshore.
