Fuel

  • Be aware of fire risks.  Take care when refuelling.  Make sure your engine space is clear of fumes before starting your engine.  Regularly check for and repair any fuel leaks.  Further information on fire risks is available in the Boating Handbook or Brochure.

  • Your fuel must be in good condition (i.e. not stale or contaminated) and suitable for the boat’s engine, fuel system and operating environment.

    Note: the newly available ‘biofuels’ (blends of ethanol with either petrol or diesel) can damage some types of fuel system components and may not be suitable for all engines.  Always check with your marine dealer or engine manufacturer if in doubt. See “Boats Biofuels and You” for further information.

  • Suggested checklist for fuel;
    • Quantity sufficient for return journey, with safety margin
    • Age less than 3 months, preferably less than 1 month
    • Octane rating meets engine manufacturer’s minimum requirement
    • Oil mix correct (for two stroke engines)
    • Biofuel content acceptable
    • Fuel system in good condition (no leaks or cracked or perished hoses etc.)
    • Fuel free of water or other contamination.
