National ForumsThe Chief Executive of NSW Maritime represents NSW on a number of national forums under the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and the Australian Transport Council (ATC). This includes the Australian Maritime Group, the National Marine Safety Committee and the National Plan Executive Committee. NSW Maritime seeks to take a lead role in the key issues considered at these forums. Australian Maritime GroupThe Australian Maritime Group (AMG) is an inter-governmental group that brings together the peak maritime organisations at state and national level to discuss issues of importance to the maritime sector. Some examples of the types of issues considered by AMG include:
National Marine Safety CommitteeThe National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC) was established by the Council of Australian Governments in 1997 to achieve consistent marine safety legislation and practices throughout Australia. The committee comprises senior executives of the state and federal marine safety agencies throughout Australia. NMSC coordinates and manages the development of a national approach to key maritime safety issues, particularly in the recreational and commercial vessel industries. An important project of the NMSC is the development of National Standards for Commercial Vessels which cover areas such as design, construction and crewing. National Plan Management CommitteeThe National Plan Management Committee (NPMC) provides strategic management of the National Plan to Combat Pollution of the Sea by Oil and other Noxious Substances (National Plan). The committee ensures governments and industry work together to coordinate an effective framework for responding to marine pollution incidents which maximises Australia’s preparedness. NSW Maritime also represents the interests of NSW on the National Plan Operations Group (NPOG) and is a member of the Environment Working Group of NPOG.
