Sea Service Required
Sea service requirements for the different Certificates of Competency are summarised below:

- 3 months service is on a trading vessel.

900 hours with a task book, of which:
- 450 hours must be beyond sheltered waters.
- 90 hours must be on a trading vessel.
All service must be on commercial vessels greater than 8 m in length with a current survey certificate. |
Mate Class 4 |

Of which:
- 12 months service is in the last 5 years
- 6 months service is on a trading vessel
- 6 months service is on a vessel less than 80m in length.

Approved service shall be counted as follows:
Inshore service will be counted at 66%.
Harbour service will be counted at 50%. |
