Periodic Survey Key Elements
The following three sections comprise the Periodic Survey System:
Safety Equipment
In the event of an accident the lifesaving and other safety equipment are often crucial to the survival of those on board. Commercial Vessels are required to carry certain safety equipment including lifejackets, liferafts, radio and flares which may remain unused in normal operation for long periods of time. Therefore it is crucial that this equipment is inspected on a regular basis to ensure the equipment is fit and ready for use. A safety equipment check is conducted during every periodic survey.
Operation
The safe operation of a vessel depends both on the master and crew, and on the ability of the vessel to work correctly at the appropriate moment. This ability is dependent on the vessel components being set up safely, and being in good condition. During every Periodic Survey, and during the Initial Survey vessel trials, the attending surveyor performs operational tests on engines, gearboxes, bilge systems, fire fighting systems, all valves and cocks, and main and emergency steering systems.
Condition
The condition of a vessel is vital to the safety of its passengers and crew, and the environment. This is a main focus of the Periodic Survey.
