Commercial Vessels

A commercial vessel is any vessel used for a commercial purpose. It includes vessels carrying passengers or goods; vessels that are hired; or vessels used in connection with a business, trade or commerce. Examples of commercial vessels include fishing vessels, tourist or charter boats, workboats, tugs, barges, ferries, water taxis, sailing schools, rescue boats, government vessels, dive boats, thrill rides and “hire and drive” boats.

Christmas Reminder - Avoid the Rush, Get in Early

The Commercial Vessels Branch is planning for the additional workloads leading up to Christmas.

The festive season traditionally sees the influx of commercial vessels seeking initial survey certificates or certificates of recognition and crew seeking new commercial marine qualifications or recognition of their interstate Certificates of Competency so that they can operate during the Christmas period.  Towing Permits are in demand as barges return to Sydney for the fireworks and other ancillary duties.  

If you have lodged an application for initial survey or a certificate of competency or a certificate of recognition (survey or certification); and it is at an advanced stage of completion awaiting outstanding documentation or fees from you, please ensure that this reaches us by Monday 14th December 2009 to be guaranteed of the issue of the final certification from us by Wednesday 23rd December 2009.

Welcome to the Commercial Vessels Division of NSW Maritime. Our goal is to serve the boating community of NSW by ensuring all commercial vessels are safe and are being operated by competent crew in a safe boating environment.

Maritime Vessels 

The Commercial Vessels Division is divided into four branches:

The Commercial Vessels Division has the following key responsibilities:

  • Inspection of vessels in commercial use and inspection of public ferry wharves
  • Certification that crew meet national standards for skills and training
  • Policy and regulatory review, and administration of commercial vessel legislation
  • Funding of local government and community groups for infrastructure
